Medan Zoo, North Sumatera

Medan Zoo was one of many tourism spot that you can visit during your holiday in North Sumatera. This zoo is ted in Bunga Rampe IV Street, Simalingkar B District, Medan Tungtungan Sub district, in about 10 kilometers from the city center. The zoo was first open at April 14, 2005 in the area of 30 hectare and contains a lot of animals from any kinds. On earlier days, this zoo was situated in the Brigjen Katamso Street, Kampung Baru District, Medan Maimun, in North Sumatera.
This zoo has become the center of attention from the first time this was build. There are about 1.000 visitors that come and visit the zoo in each weekends. In work days, the visitor also come here only in smaller number. People come here to see the exotic tropical animals, such as the Sumatran Tiger or Panthera Tigris Sumatrae which can only be found in the island of Sumatera.
These Sumatran tigers in the zoo has occupied in the the mountainous and semi-mountainous forest, low land forest, and also in the swamp forest in Sumateran Island, and they are becoming extinct right now. There are only 400 to 500 tigers sub species Panthera Tigris sumatrae which still inhabits in Indonesian wild life gardens in Sumatera Island, and there are 250 tigers that was maintained inside the zoos in the world.
The Sumateran tiger had a dark color, with wide and closely patterned black pattern. They are different with the Siberian tiger, because Siberian has striped front legs. The Sumateran tiger is the smallest tiger of the tiger species, with 2.4 meters (8 foot) long from head to tail weighted 120 kilogram (264 pounds) with the height 90 centimeters.
