In some years ago, if you want to visit the huge megalithic passage tomb of the Newgrange, then you need to clambered over some empty fields and stonewalls and walked right in. You need to reach the burial chamber which is situated at the center of the monument. You can do this by making the way cautiously along the narrow tunnel. Usually, you will find the chamber deserted, except for the beer cans which was usually left by local underage drinkers.
This site was neglected for years since the first time it was there. If you come here, you can, and feel the space, time and peace for you. You can also imagine about the ancient culture who has built this. The narrow tunnel will then go to the central part of the vaulted interior, which was especially designed for the preparation of the winter solstice. How and why this was done is still the subject of speculation until today.
This place is no longer the obscure spot which is situated in the countryside. There are some extensive conservation works which have been carried out, and was undoubtedly needed. Today, you will no longer allow going with the direct access to this special monument. You must start at its Visitor and Heritage Centre, and then you will be bussed in the large groups down to the tomb with the obligatory guide.
Protection of the site is a good thing. But because this spot is famous, there will be a lot of people come and go here. So, you can also join them and enjoy this site together.
